![]() The biggest letdown of 3K is the battles. Would rather have a spy on the campaign map i can actually use rather than a purely RNG based spy. If it wasn't there, i don't think it would make a lot of difference. It takes a great deal of time and effort to implement and rarely pays off. There is a spy mechanic, but again it is overrated. You ask for something, there is a bar showing if the deal is acceptable or not and then you can play around adding and removing resources, regions, followers and ancillaries to get the deal. It still basically works the same way though. Its just better implemented than other total wars and has more options. Its not like diplomacy is that groundbreaking that it can carry the game. It also adds more types of treaty as well as alliances between factions. In 3K in a nutshell, diplomacy is decent, if overrated on this sub, but battles and units are dull.Įssentially, it adds region trading, more things to trade and thus, bargain for things. It really depends what kind of strategy you like. Neither game is perfect, of course, but 3K is one of the best games CA has ever made. It's in army composition selection and lots of faction-specific mechanics.Īdd to that the inclusion of character-based play, which is optional, but greatly adds to narrative and immersion if you do opt for it. As others have said, the diplomacy is a great example of this, but really this brilliance of design runs through the whole game. The mechanics are tightly designed around making interesting choices, which is the key gameplay experience. ![]() In terms of careful game design, it's better than WH in every way aside from fantasy and magic-based tactical bounty. Some players love WH because of the tactical variety, and some think that other elements are equally important.Īnd this is where we get to 3K. So what is the ceiling on the improvement that can come from tactical variety? Well that is down to personal taste to some extent. In game design, balance is a key element, and providing literally endless tactical options would *not* be good. However, do not think that more is always better. With the element of magic and fantasy in general, there are simply more possibilities in tactical mechanics. The only thing that WH games have over 3K is sheer breadth of tactical variety - tactical meaning it relates to battle, not the campaign map.
